Bohr's model of the atom can be described as follows:

(i) According to Neil Bohr, the nucleus is situated at the centre of the atom.

(ii) The electrons revolve around the nucleus in definite circular fixed orbits. These orbits are associated with definite energies and are called energy shells or energy levels.

(iii) These shells are represented as K, L, M, N......etc. They are also numbered as $1, 2, 3, 4 . . . .$ ,etc. As long as an electron remains in a particular orbit, it does not lose or gain energy. This means that the energy of the electron in a particular energy level shall remain constant. Therefore, these orbits are also called stationary states.

(iv) To change from one orbit to another the electron must absorb or emit a quantity of energy exactly equal to the difference in energy between the two orbits.

Thus, Bohr's model of the atom explains satisfactorily the stability of the atom.
