Describe a method that you can use to find the shape of the magnetic field around a bar magnet. Your method should include, how you can determine the direction of field lines?

Accepted Answer

First, place the bar magnet in the centre of a plane paper. Now, trace the outline of the magnet by using a pencil. Place the compass at one pole of the magnet and mark a dot next to it which shows the direction the compass arrow points.

Move the compass so that the base of the arrow is at the dot we have made. Now make a new mark where the tip of the arrow is pointing this time. Keep doing this until we reach the other end of the magnet.

Now, join all the dots. Repeat the process until we have drawn as many lines as we can for both ends of the magnet.

The direction of field lines are from North to the South Pole as a custom.
