Describe an activity to find the conditions required for rusting.

Experiment :-
(i) Take a few un-rusted iron nails in a test tube A and cover them in ordinary water, leave the test tube on a stand.
(ii) Boil some distilled water in test tube B in order to expel the dissolved air. Drop a few un-rusted iron nails into it. Put some oil over the water surface to cut it off from the air above cork the test tube and allow it to stand.

(iii)Take some pieces of anhydrous calcium chloride in test tube C. Slip in a perforated cardboard disc into the test tube. Place a few un-rusted nails over the disk. Cork the test tube and allowed it to stand.

(iv)After a few days we observed that rusting occurs only in the nails placed in test tube A not in others. In test tube B oil prevents the passage of air into the water. So iron nails are being exposed only to water so, rusting does not take place.

(v)Whereas in test tube C there is no presence of moisture or water so rusting does not take place. By this activity we can conclude that moisture or water and air are the two conditions essential for rusting of iron.
