Materials required:

Iron nails $- 03$

Test tubes $- 03$

Corks $- 03$

Tap water

Anhydrous quicklime (calcium oxide)

Dilute acid

Method:

Place one iron nail in a test tube $A, B$ and $C$ .

Add tap water to test tube $A$ , quicklime to test tube $B$ , and a few drops of dilute acid and water to test tube $C$ .

Close the mouth of test tubes using corks, and leave them for $15$ days.

Observations and Conclusion:

Test tube $A$ - The iron nail gets rusted in this test tube since it is exposed to moisture and oxygen.

Test tube $B$ - Anhydrous calcium oxide is a good dehydrating agent. It absorbs all the moisture present in the test tube. Hence, the iron does not get rusted even if there is only oxygen.

Test tube $C$ - Rusting of iron takes place since there is oxygen and moisture. However, the dilute acid present in it reacts with the rust from the surface of the metal.

Hence, oxygen, moisture and acids are responsible for rusting in iron.
