The phenomenon of splitting of white light into its seven constituent colours is called dispersion.

Experiment:

In a darkened room, set a glass prism in front of a wall or other surface, then shine a torch or any other source of white light (preferably in a shape of thin bright slit). Arrange in such a way that the light passes through the prism and onto a surface. Adjust the prism so that a clear band of distinct colour appears on the wall. Rotate the prism slowly, until the angle is right and the light refracts into a clear pattern of seven colours.
