Properties of colloids such as colligative property, Tyndall effect and Brownian movement can be explained as given below:

Colligative property: Colloidal particles being bigger aggregates, the number of particles in a colloidal solution is comparatively small as compared to a true solution. Hence, the values of colligative properties such as osmotic pressure, lowering in vapour pressure, depression in freezing point and elevation in boiling point are of small order compared to values shown by the true solutions at the same concentrations.

Tyndall effect: When a strong beam of light is passed through a colloidal solution and viewed at right angles, the path of the light is illuminated. This is called Tyndall effect. The cause of Tyndall effect is the scattering of light by the colloidal particles.

Brownian movement: The random or zig-zag movement of the colloidal particles present in a colloidal solution is called Brownian movement. The moving molecules of the dispersion medium collide with the colloidal particles which are relatively larger. As a result, the colloidal particles acquire kinetic energy and start moving.
