Describe classes of proteins with their importance.

Proteins are classified into three categories based on their shape, components and nature of their molecules.

(A) On the basis of shape-

(i) Fibrous proteins- In this polypeptide chains are folded to form fiber. They are water insoluble.

eg- Collagen, actin and myosin, Keratin

(ii) Globular proteins- In this proteins polypeptide chain are folded in a spherical shaped. They are water soluble.

eg- Serum globulin, haemoglobin, enzymes, hormones, albumin.

(B) On the basis of components-

(1) Simple proteins (2) Conjugated proteins

(3) Derived proteins.

(1) Simple proteins- They consist of only amino acid. eg- albumin, globulin, collagen, keratin, histones.

(2) Conjugated protein- They consist of a protein molecule and non-protein molecule called prosthetic group attached to it. Non-proteins can be phosphate, pigments, Sugar, lipid or metal ion.

eg- Chromoproteins, phospho protein, Nucleoproteins, glycoproteins etc.

(3) Derived proteins-

They are formed by incomplete breakdown of proteins. eg- peptones, peptides.

(C) On the basis of Nature-

(1) Acidic proteins- They consist of acidic amino acid. eg- blood protein

(2) Basic proteins- They consist of basic amino acid. eg- histones.

Importance of Proteins-

They are building molecules of cells and tissue. They help in growth, repair and reproduction.

They also make protective structure like hair, nails, scales, horns all these are made up of Keratin.

All metabolic reaction taking place inside the cells are catalysed by the enzymes which in turn are proteins.

They provide protection to our body against infection, thus they act as antibodies.

Collagen present in connective tissue provide tensile strength.

They also help in transport. eg- haemoglobin transport oxygen in the body.

Proteins like fibrinogen helps in blood clotting.
