Plant show two different types of movements:

Movements dependent on growth (tropic movements).

Movements independent of growth (nastic movements).

Different types of tropic movements:

Phototropism: The response of plants towards or away from light is called phototropism. Example: Bending of sunflower plants shoot towards light.

Geotropism: The response of plants towards or away from gravity is called geotropism. Example: The root system of the plant generally grows towards gravity showing positive geotropism and the shoot system grows away from gravity showing negative geotropism.

Hydrotropism: The response of plants towards or away from water is called hydrotropism. Example: Plant root exhibit hydrotropism by growing towards water.

Chemotropism: The response of plants towards or away from the certain chemical is called chemotropism. Example: Growing of pollen tube towards ovule during fertilization.

Thigmotropism: The response of plant to contact or touch with any supporter is called thigmotropism. Example: Tendril of pea plant circles around a supporter.

Different types of nastic movement:

Seismonasty: This type of movement is carried out in response to an external stimulus of shock or touch. Example: Folding of leaves of Touch- me -not when touched.

Nyctinastic: This type of movement is also known as sleeping movements because it occurs in response to darkness. Example: Most legumes plants show nyctinastic movements as they close their leaves in the evening & open them again in the morning.
