The blood is a fluid connective tissue which circulates in the body through the arteries and veins. The blood circulation in the human beings is a double circulation as the blood flows through the heart twice during one complete circuit.

The smaller circuit: The smaller circuit involves the circulation of blood between the heart and the lungs through the pulmonary artery and pulmonary vein. The pulmonary artery carries the deoxygenated blood away from the heart (right ventricle) to the lungs. The pulmonary vein carries the oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart (left atrium). This circuit is called the pulmonary circuit.

The greater circuit: The greater circuit involves the circulation of blood between the heart and body organs other than lungs through the aorta and vena cava. The aorta carries the oxygenated blood from the heart (left ventricle) to the body organs and the superior and inferior vena cava collects the deoxygenated blood from the body organs and transport it to the heart ( right atrium). This circuit is called the systemic circuit.
