Humans, the food-gatherers in the Paleolithic and Mesolithic Ages, became food producers in the Neolithic Age. This change took place due to some gradual and slow changes:

Humans started the domestication of plants and animals, realising which plants to grow for food grains. Thus, agriculture was discovered. Soon, man domesticated animals, which, in turn, provided meat and milk.

Practising a sedentary lifestyle, humans began to live in huts and cultivate their own crops. They also learned to sharpen and polish their tools. Sickles and stone axes helped Neolithic humans in ploughing their fields.

Humans began to domesticate animals like dogs, sheep and goats. This helped them to procure meat and wool for winter. Animal excreta helped humans make manure for their fields, which helped increase agricultural yield.

Now, leading a settled life, man further learned the use of the wheel, his discovery, to help him weave baskets and make earthenware through the potter's wheels.

Thus, the food grains and the meat and milk that man acquired by the domestication of plants and animals near his hut could be stored in these vessels for later use. This made his transition from a gatherer to essentially a producer.
