Describe how you could find the density of the metal object in the given figure. In your answer include the equipment you would use, how you would use the equipment and what you would do with the data you collect.

Accepted Answer

This is an irregular-shaped solid metal object. In order to measure the volume of the given metal object, we use the displacement method i.e. a solid when immersed in a liquid, displaces the volume of liquid equal to its own volume. The measurement of the volume of the given irregular body by displacement method and hence to find its density can be understood by the following steps:

1. Measure the mass of the given solid metal object using a common beam balance and note it. Let it be $M gram$ .

2. Select a measuring cylinder that is about three or four times larger than the object. Partially fill it with water (as in the figure a), enough to cover the object.

3. Note the level of water. Let it be $V_{1} mL$ .

4. Now, tie the given solid (metal object) with a thread and gently lower the solid in the water contained in the measuring cylinder as shown in figure (b). Take care that no water splashes out. Note the level of water again. Let it be $V_{2} mL$ .

5. Find the difference, $V_{2} - V_{1}$ . It gives the volume $V$ of the metal object i.e.

$V = (V_{2} - V_{1}) {cm}^{3}$ $(1 mL = 1 {cm}^{3})$

6. Then, calculate the density of the solid by using the following formula:

$Density = \frac{Mass}{Volume} = \frac{M}{V} \frac{g}{{cm}^{3}}$
