Miriam carries out an experiment in the equipment as shown below. Iron wool is very thin strands of iron. Iron undergoes corrosion when left open in a wet condition for a long time. So, when the iron wool in the test tube is left for 5 days inside the beaker as shown in the figure, the iron wool undergoes corrosion. The corrosion of iron is called rusting. It happens because iron reacts with oxygen in the air when water or water vapour is present. A reddish-brown coating of iron oxide is formed on the iron wool by oxidation in the presence of moisture is called rust. So, oxygen and water must be present for iron to form rust. Rusting of iron is an oxidation process. The iron wool in this experiment gets the oxygen and water vapour from the water present in the test tube. So, the level of water in the test tube reduces as the oxygen dissolved in the water is used for the rusting process.
