The inland drainage system is studied based on its origin and destination. These are generally streams originating from the Himalayas or Aravallis, but they dry up in between or enter any lake rather than enter the oceans.

The internal drainage systems of the Shiwaliks and Ladakh are covered by the Himalayan system. The Ghaggar river, the Kosi river, Patiala ki Rao, Jainti ki Rao, and the Aksai-Chin river of Ladakh are examples.

The Ghaggar river flows from the Shiwaliks' Morni hills and enters the plains near Panchkula. It reaches the Hanumangarh city of Rajasthan through the Punjab-Haryana border, fed by various tributaries during the rainy season. But due to irrigation and heavy evaporation, it ends up on its way. Its main tributaries are Sukhna, Tangri, Markanda, and Saraswati.

Due to excessive heat and fast evaporation, the rivers originating from the Aravallis dry up before reaching the Sambhar lake or Jaipur lake. Luni originates near Sambhar lake, but after flowing for some distance, it disappears into the Rann of Kutch.

Gobind sagar, Himachal Pradesh; Loktak Lake, Manipur; Harnag, Dhudnag, Anchor, and Tao-Murari are the important lakes in the Kashmir region. The major lakes of the Kumaon Himalayas are Bhimtal, Chaderpal Tal, Nainital, Punatal, Gugnatal, Sat Tal, Naukucchiatal, Khurpatal, etc.

Sambhar, Salt Lake, Jivai, Chauparbarabandh, Saipad, Jaisomand, Didwana, Panchbhadra, Lunkaransar, Kachor, Revasa, Rajasmand, Fatehsagar, Udaisagar, Pichola, etc. are important lakes in the Thar desert area.

The lakes of the Peninsular Plateau include Lonar in Maharashtra, Chilka in Odisha, Pulicat of Tamil Nadu, and Kolleru in Andhra Pradesh.
