Vijayalaya founded the Cholas and built the strongest empire in India between AD $800$ - AD $1200$ . After the defeat of Vijayalaya Rajaraja Chola and Rajendra Chola revived the empire and became the greatest power in South India.

Peasants, cattle keepers, and artisans all contributed to the revenue. These funds were used to keep the king's army afloat as well as to build temples and forts. The people in charge of collecting revenue were from powerful families. Close relatives of the king held these roles, which included major official offices in the centre.

With the advent of irrigation agriculture, peasant settlements known as ur prospered. These communities were grouped together to form larger groupings known as Nadu. An assembly or sabha of notable Brahmana landholders was in charge of each Brahmadeya. These assemblies performed admirably. Inscriptions, commonly found on the stone walls of temples, detailed their judgements. Nagarams, or trade associations, also served as governmental bodies in towns on occasion.
