The transverse section of a monocot stem shows the following parts:

Epidermis: It is the outermost layer of the stem that consists of a single layer of thin-walled parenchymatous cells. It may possess cuticle and stomata.

Hypodermis: It is located below the epidermis, made up of few layers of sclerenchyma cells.

Ground tissue: The remaining portion after hypodermis is referred to as ground tissue. It is made up of parenchyma cells. There is no differentiation into endodermis, pericycle and pith.

Vascular bundles: These are conjoint, collateral and closed. These are distributed irregularly in the ground tissue. The peripheral bundles are small. Each bundle is surrounded by a sclerenchymatous bundle sheath. The xylem is endarch. There lies a prominent cavity just beneath the protoxylem, called protoxylem cavity.

Vascular bundles The vascular bundles of dicot stem are conjoint, collateral and open. Cambium is present in between xylem and phloem. The vascular bundles are conjoint, collateral and closed.
