Describe the characteristic features of different Protochordates.

The protochordate is considered as the forerunner of vertebrates. Based on the nature of the notochord, it is classified into two subphyla namely, Urochordata and Cephalochordata.

Subphylum Urochordata:

The members of this subphylum have a notochord which is present only in the tail region of a free-living larva.

Adults are sessile forms and mostly undergo degeneration.

The body of these animals is covered with a tunic or test. E.g., Ascidian.

Subphylum Cephalochordata:

The members of this subphylum are small fish like marine chordates with unpaired dorsal fins.

The notochord extends throughout the entire length of the body. E.g., Amphioxus.
