In the kingdom Fungi, the body is not differentiated into root, stem and leaves, i.e. fungi are thalloid.

Fungi may be unicellular (only yeast) or multicellular.

The body of a multicellular filamentous fungus is called mycelium. It is composed of a thread-like structure called hyphae.

Fungi possess a definite cell wall containing fungal cellulose or chitin or both.

Fungi lack chlorophyll and cannot prepare their own food by the process of photosynthesis. They are therefore, heterotrophic and obtain their food either from dead organic matter (saprophytic) or from other living organisms (parasitic).

Asexual reproduction mainly occurs by the formation of spores. Sexual reproduction occurs by the formation of sex organs and the fusion of gametes. During reproduction, the fungus starts producing aerial fructification and reproductive bodies.

Examples: Yeast, mushrooms, Aspergillus, Mucor, Rhizopus, etc.
