The part of the plant that absorbs water and minerals from the soil is called the root system. The root has the following five zones or regions:

Root cap region: The delicate apex of the root of most plants is covered by a thin cap-like structure known as a root cap or calyptra. The main function of the root cap is to provide protection to the root tip. The roots of some aquatic and some parasitic plants lack root caps.

Meristematic zone- It is a thin-walled region with dense protoplasm which is responsible for the growth of the root.

Zone of elongation- The cells of this region absorb water and minerals and elongate quickly that increases the length of the root.

Zone of maturation- It contains mature cells that form a permanent zone of the root. This zone has root hairs. These are the unicellular outgrowths of the epidermis of the roots.
