Water that has been used and becomes dirty is known as wastewater. All of us generate wastewater as a result of various activities. Some common sources of wastewater are as follows:

Domestic wastewater includes soaps, detergents, human excreta, food waste oils, plastic and paper.

Industrial wastewater contains harmful acids, alkalis, organic compounds and toxic chemicals like lead, arsenic, cadmium, chromium and mercury. The wastewater coming out of industries, which is often disposed into waterbodies, is called industrial effluents.

The wastewater generated from farms contains poisonous pesticides, chemical fertilisers and animal waste.

The wastewater from hospitals, contains disease-causing germs, residual drugs, blood, chemicals and human excreta.

A large amount of wastewater is generated from the construction of buildings and roads. Wastewater is also generated as a result of mining operations.
