Krebs cycle is the energy production cycle of all aerobic living organisms. It is responsible for the production of numerous organic acids which form a key substrate in amino acid synthesis required in nitrogen metabolism. Pyruvic acid gets diverted to other metabolic pathways through this cycle.

In Krebs cycle process, One mole of glucose is oxidised to yield 2 ATP molecules, 6 molecules of NADH, and 2 molecules of FADH₂. Later, ATP is produced from NADH and FADH₂ through an electron transport system. Krebs cycle is also called citric acid cycle due to the following reasons:

The great scientist H.A.Krebs (1937) first discovered the reactions of this cycle and according to his name this cycle is called as Krebs cycle.

The first compound formed in this cycle is citric acid and accordingly, the cycle is known as citric acid cycle.

Thirdly, the first compound formed, citric acid has three carboxylic (COOH) groups and therefore the citric acid is a tricarboxylic acid and accordingly the cycle is also known as tricarboxylic acid cycle or TCA cycle.
