Describe the layers of soil.

The layers of soil are: -
(i) A-Horizon or Topsoil: - It is the topmost layer of soil. It is rich in humus and minerals which are needed by plants for their growth. It is soft and porous and darker than other layers. It can hold water.

(ii) B-Horizon or Subsoil: - It lies below the topsoil. It has very small population of living organisms. It is less fertile as compared to A-Horizon. It contains comparatively less amount of humus. It is rich in minerals and generally harder and more compact than topsoil.

(iii) C-Horizon: - It lies below subsoil. It is made up of small lumps of rocks. Plant roots cannot penetrate this layer and very little organic material is found in this layer.

(iv) R-Horizon or Bedrock: - This layer is also called parent rock. It produces soil over a long period of time and are very than other layers. It consists of the unwanted rock layer that is beneath all the other layers.
