Describe the main problems of Indian Agriculture.

Indian agriculture is facing three types of problems: Human Problems, Institutional problems, and technical problems. These problems are responsible for low agricultural productivity and are a hurdle in the development of agriculture.

The social Atmosphere in rural areas and the pressure of the population on land are responsible for Human problems. In rural areas, the farmers are unable to adopt modern techniques as they are illiterate. Also, they fight on petty issues and engaged in litigations, as they are in grip of casteism. This social environment of superstition, conservative attitude, and ignorance are responsible for the backwardness of Indian agriculture. Also, the rapidly growing Indian population is dependent on agriculture for food and employment. This has resulted in the problem of subdivision and fragmentation and led to an increase in disguised unemployment.

Institutional problems are a consequence of the small size of landholdings and the land tenure system. The average size of land holdings is very small in India. This makes it very difficult to adopt scientific methods of cultivation. Although the land tenure system has legally been abolished in India, still the condition of the cultivator and tenant is not satisfactory.

Technical Problems are faced by farmers because of inadequate irrigation facilities, use of traditional techniques of cultivation and old agricultural implements, lack of improved seeds, lack of Manure, defective agricultural marketing system, lack of credit facilities, etc.
