The variety of uses of petroleum in different industries include:

Lubricants: It is used as lubricants in cars and industrial machines to minimise friction.

Chemical Industry: Chemical fertilisers, synthetic fibres, insecticides, synthetic rubber, nylon, plastics, dyes and paints are made from large by-products of petroleum such as naphtha, grease, petroleum jelly, wax, butadiene, etc.

Pharmaceuticals: In the production of topical medicines, by-products of petroleum are used.

Domestic uses: Detergents, vaseline, wax and other household items are petroleum by-products. Kerosene is used for cooking, lighting and other household purposes.

Agriculture: Ammonia, which is used as a nitrogen source in agricultural fertilisers is manufactured from petroleum.
