Bryophytes include various mosses and liverworts that are commonly found in moist, shaded areas of the hills. The plant body is more differentiated than that of algae. It is thallus like, prostrate or erect and attached to the substratum by unicellular or multicellular rhizoid.

The main plant body is haploid. It produces gametes and is therefore called gametophyte. Sex organs are multicellular and surrounded by sterile jacket layer. The male sex organ is called antheridium and female sex organ is archegonium. Antherozoids released into water where they come in contact with female gamete and forms zygote.

Zygote develops into a multicellular body called a sporophyte. Sporophyte is not free-living, but attached to the photosynthetic gametophyte and derives nourishment from it. Sporophyte consists of foot, seta and capsule. Capsule contains spore mother cells which undergo reduction division to form spores. On germination, each spore forms a gametophyte called protonema.
