The process of cell division that results in the formation of four daughter cells each with half the number of chromosomes of the parent cell is called meiosis.

The different stages of prophase 1 can be explained by the following phases are:

(1) Leptotene – The condensation of chromosomes begins, and it attains a compact structure during leptotene.

(2) Zygotene – The pairing of homologous chromosomes starts a process known as chromosomal synapsis at this stage. A pair of homologous chromosome forms a complex structure known as tetrad or bivalent.

(3) Pachytene – Crossing over of non-sister chromatids of homologous chromosomes occurs at the recombination nodules of this stage.

(4) Diplotene – Diplotene helps in the separation of the homologous chromosomes of the bivalents except at the sites of cross-over. The X-shaped structures called chiasmata is formed during separation.

(5) Diakinesis – The termination of chiasmata marks this stage and the meiotic spindle is assembled to separate the homologous chromosomes. The nucleolus disappears and the nuclear membrane breaks down.
