Principle: Electric bell works based on magnetic effect of the current.

Construction of an electric bell:

An electric bell consists of a horseshoe magnet, armature hammer, elastic steel strips, screw, gong, push-button switch, Soft iron electromagnet, spring connected to armature as shown in the diagram.

Working of an electric bell: On pressing the push-button switch the circuit gets closed. Electric current flows through the coils around the horseshoe soft iron which gets magnetized. The magnet attracts the armature, pulling the hammer to the gong. The hammer striking the gong produce sound. As soon as the armature along with the elastic steel strip is pulled towards the magnet, the circuit gets broken between the points A and B and the flow of current stops. With the circuit 'open' the electromagnet loses its magnetic property and releases armature which gets back to its original position. The steel strip swings back to make contact between A and B. Thus, the circuit again gets closed. This happens alternatively and the hammer strikes the gong repeatedly to produce ringing sound.
