The spinal cord is the cylindrical part of the central nervous system that originates from the lower part of the medulla oblongata and extends to the first or second lumbar vertebrae. It is present within the vertebral canal. Posteriorly it rapidly narrows below the lumbar enlargement to a cone-shaped structure called conus medullaris or conus terminalis. From the conus medullaris, the thin filaments called filum terminale passes downward.

T.S. of the spinal cord: The spinal cord is protected by three layers of tissues, known as the meninges. The dura mater forms the outermost meningeal layer, the arachnoid mater is the mid-layer, and the pia mater is the inner layer. The T.S. of the peripheral region of the spinal cord shows white matter, and towards the interior of this region, grey matter is present. It also shows deep ventral fissure and shallow dorsal fissure. From the dorsal fissure, a thin sheet of connective tissue called the dorsal septum extends inward. The central part of the spinal cord surrounds the central canal, which is the extension of the fourth ventricle that contains the cerebrospinal fluid. Two dorsolateral horns and two ventrolateral horns give the 'H' - shaped appearance to the grey matter of the spinal cord. Dorsal horns extend towards the dorsal roots, whereas ventral horns extend in ventral roots of spinal nerves.
