Seminiferous tubules: The transverse section of the testis shows several seminiferous tubules separated from each other by the loose connective tissue stroma or interstitial tissue. In cross section the seminiferous tubules appear to be round or oval or irregular in shape. Each seminiferous tubule is externally bound by a basement membrane of fibrous connective tissue and an inner basal lamina.

Each tubule is filled with complex germinal epithelial tissue cells in which two major cell types are present: gametogenic or spermatogenic or germ cells and supporting or sustentacular or Sertoli cells (nurse cells).

Spermatogenic Cells:
Each seminiferous tubule is internally lined by five layers of spermatogenic cells and each layer representing a particular stage in the development of spermatozoa. From outside inwards the following germ cells are present according to the respective layer: (i) Spermatogonia-the primitive germ cells which are arranged on the basement membrane, (ii) Primary spermatocytes, (iii) Secondary spermatocytes, (iv) Spermatid and (v) Spermatozoa.

Sustentacular Or Sertoli cells:
Sertoli cells are elongated pyramidal or columnar supporting cells attached to the basement membranes of the seminiferous tubules and the apical ends extend towards the lumen of the tubules.
