The heart is a muscular organ about the size of a wrist, located just behind and slightly left of the breastbone. It is made up of cardiac muscles. The heart is a circulatory organ which pumps blood to all parts of the body with the help of blood vessels. The series of blood vessels present in our body are arteries, veins, and capillaries. Heart beats 60 to 80 times a minute throughout the life. The heart shows rhythmic contractions and relaxations of muscles.

The heart is divided into a right and left side by the septum. The heart has four chambers, two small upper chambers called atria and two larger lower chambers called ventricles. The right atrium receives deoxygenated blood from all parts of the body and pumps it to the right ventricle. The collected carbon dioxide-rich blood is then pumped to the lungs for oxygenation. In the lungs, the exchange of gases takes place and oxygenated blood is sent back to the left atrium. It pumps it to the left ventricle, which in turn pumps off the oxygenated blood to all parts of the body through arteries. The valves regulate the flow of blood in a single direction and prevent the backflow of the blood. The pulmonary artery carries blood from the heart to the lungs and the pulmonary vein carries blood from the lungs to the heart.
