A nerve is formed by a group of nerve fibres or axons encased by the tubular medullary sheath. The covered fatty material called the myelin sheath, insulates the neuron for conduction of nerve impulse.

The three kinds of nerves are as follows:

1. Sensory nerve - This nerve brings impulses from sense organs as these have sensory fibres. These nerves carry the impulses from the sense organs to the brain or to the spinal cord. E.g., Optic nerves of the eye.

2. Motor nerves - These carry impulses to muscles from the brain or spinal cord. E.g., Nerves of the muscles of the eyeball.
3. Mixed nerve - This nerve has both sensory and motors fibres. E.g., The nerve which goes to the tongue.
