The human brain, also called the encephalon, is one of the largest and complex organs of the human nervous system. In humans, it is divided into three primary parts such as forebrain, midbrain and hindbrain.

Forebrain: The forebrain or prosencephalon is again subdivided into two parts, namely telencephalon and diencephalon. The telencephalon is the anterior subdivision of the primary forebrain that develops into the cerebrum (cerebral cortex), corpus striatum, and olfactory lobes. The cerebrum is the largest part of the brain, divided into two hemispheres (left and right) by a deep longitudinal fissure. Each hemisphere is further divided into four lobes (majorly), which are frontal, parietal, occipital, and temporal. The diencephalon is a small part of the forebrain situated between the telencephalon and midbrain. It consists of the thalamus, hypothalamus, epithalamus, and metathalamus.

Midbrain: The midbrain or mesencephalon is the smallest and least differentiated part of the brain that connects the hindbrain with the forebrain. The midbrain consists of two parts, which are the tectum and cerebral peduncle. The tectum consists of the superior colliculus and inferior colliculus. The cerebral peduncle consists of the tegmentum, substantia nigra, and aqueduct of Sylvius.

Hindbrain: The hindbrain or rhombencephalon is the lowermost portion of the brain that consists of two parts, namely the metencephalon and myelencephalon. The metencephalon is the upper portion of the hindbrain that consists of pons Varolii and cerebellum. The myelencephalon is the lowermost part of the brain that consists of the medulla oblongata only.
