Describe with the help of an experiment that a freely suspended magnet comes to rest in the north-south direction.

Aim: To show that a freely suspended magnet always rests in a north-south direction.

Apparatus required: A bar magnet with poles marked on it, unspin thread, magnetic needle, a sheet of paper, and a wooden stand.

Procedure:

(i) With the help of a compass-needle mark the north-south direction on the sheet of paper.

(ii) Suspend the bar magnet with the help of a thread as shown in the figure drawn above.

(iii) Leave the magnet for some time and compare the direction in which it comes to rest with that marked on the paper.

(iv) Give a little twist to the thread and repeat the above observation.

Conclusion: It is found that the magnet always comes to rest in a north-south direction. Its north-pole points in the geographical north and the south-pole points towards the geographical south direction. This behavior of the bar magnet is due to the behavior of the earth as a magnet.
