Definition Oviparous animals lay fertilised or unfertilised eggs. Examples: Birds and reptiles. Viviparous animals give birth to young ones. Examples: Most of the mammals like human, cow, lion, tiger, horse, rat, cat, dog, etc.

Feature Ovipary Vivipary

Place of development The fertilised eggs remain covered by hard calcareous shell and laid in a safe place in the environment. When the period of incubation is complete, the young ones hatch out. The fertilised egg (zygote) develops into a young one inside the body of the female organism.

Feature Ovipary Vivipary

Survival rate Chances of survival of young ones are less because of the female lay egg in the open environment. Chances of survival of young one are more in this case because of proper embryonic care and protection inside the mother's womb.
