Trading towns were associated with the importing and exporting of goods. These towns grew as a result of the product found in that region and its proximity to ports and major trade routes.

Examples of administrative towns are Hansi, Kara, and Anhilwara. A few examples of temple towns include Madurai in Tamil Nadu and Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh. Masulipatnam and Surat were important trading towns of the medieval period.
