Archaeologist reconstructs the past by following different steps:

i) They excavate any site and try to find out the objects like tools, ornaments, coins, or the ruins of buildings, remains of grains, animal bones, etc.

iii) Then they classify their findings according to material and functions. Like they have to classify whether the object was made of gold or steatite or copper. They have to understand its use as a tool whether it was used on a daily basis of for rituals.

iii) They try to understand the use of that object either comparing it to its present day usage or by investigating the context of where it was found.

iv) To reconstruct the past sometimes they have to rely on indirect resources. For example to get an idea about the clothing of Harappan Civilisation the clothing of stone statues of this civilisation were studied.

v) They also have to frame the reference of any object to identify its proper importance.Like the importance of Harappan seals could not be identified unless they were put in the trading network of Harappan Civilisation.
