Almost every house in Rajasthan's semi-arid and desert regions, particularly in Bikaner, Phalodi and Barmer, has subterranean tanks called tankas for storing drinking water. The tanks could be the size of a room. The tankas were built inside the main house or the courtyard as part of a well-developed rooftop rainwater gathering system.

Rainwater may be kept in tankas until the next shower, making it a very reliable source of drinking water when all other sources have dried up, especially during the summer. Rainwater, or palarpani as it is known in these regions, is said to be the purest type of natural water. Many homes built underground rooms adjacent to the 'tanka' to avoid the summer heat by keeping the room cool.
