Emergence of Christianity

Jesus Christ was born in the sixth century BCE in Bethlehem, near Jerusalem. It was part of the Roman Empire under the rule of Augustus. Jesus Christ began to preach a new faith to the people that became popular as Christianity. According to Christianity all men and women are the children of God. Jesus taught compassion for fellow human beings and the need to care for the needy. Therefore, his teachings directly appealed to the common people. His teachings are summarised in what is called the 'Sermon on the Mount'.
