During $1921$ and $1922$ , the Non-Cooperation Movement gained momentum. Students in large numbers left schools and colleges, that were under the control of the government, and lawyers too stopped their practices. Many Indians gave up the British titles bestowed on them, and law meetings were boycotted. People boycotted foreign goods and requested Indians to accept desi goods. The Non-Cooperation movement was a forerunner of all the revolts against the British that were to happen.

People were filled with patriotic feelings and joined the movement for Swaraj. They had different ideologies for attaining swaraj. Some believed in non-violent ways, while others had more extreme ways to achieve it.

The peasants in Gujarat arranged non-violent campaigns against the British for demanding high taxes. A similar situation was faced in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, where liquor shops were attacked. Another incident that took place in Guntur, in Andhra Pradesh, was that the tribals and poor organised for forest satyagraha as they were not allowed by the British to use forests for grazing their cattle.

During this period, unity between Hindus and Muslims was witnessed. In Sind, Muslim traders showed their support towards the Khilafat movement, while in Bengal, the Cooperation Khilafhat Movement gained communal support on a large scale. Similarly, in Punjab, Sikhs were against the mahants and wanted them to be removed from Gurdwaras. In Assam, plantation workers demanded a wage increase, and they even left the plantation thinking that they were following Gandhi's wish.

Many Indians regarded Gandhiji as a saviour who would set them free from the clutches of the British and help them attain their freedom and overcome poverty. All different sections of society had their expectations from Gandhiji, and these demands vary from society's one section to another. At times, people used to engage themselves in illegal activities in the name of Gandhiji.
