Farming in India is dependent on monsoons. Irrigation is the artificial application of water to the soil through various systems of tubes, pumps, and sprays. There are many types of irrigation systems, in which water is supplied to the entire field uniformly. The various sources of irrigation are ponds, lakes, canals, wells, tube wells, rivers and dams.

There are two types of irrigation systems:

(i) Traditional irrigation system: In these methods, cattle or human labour is used. Hence, these methods are cheaper but less efficient. The different traditional methods are moat, chain pump, rahat, dhekli, etc.

Moat: It is a manual irrigation method. By this method, water is directly taken out of wells with the help of a pulley and is used to irrigate fields.

Rahat: In this method, water is drawn out of wells by animals. Animals move and rotate the wheel lead to draw the water from the well.

Chain pump: A chain pump consists of two large wheels, connected by an endless chain. The bottom wheel is half immersed in the water source. As the wheel is turned, the connected buckets dip into the pool and pick up water. The chain then lifts them to the upper wheel, where the water from the buckets is transferred to the pool.

(ii) Modern irrigation system: Modern methods of irrigation are aimed at conserving water. At the same time, these methods ensure that water is equally distributed in different parts of a field.

Sprinkler system: Water is distributed through a system of pipes usually by pumping. It is then sprayed into the air through sprinklers so that it breaks up into small water drops which fall to the ground.

Drip system: It is the most efficient water and nutrient delivery system for growing crops. It delivers water and nutrients directly to the plant’s root zone, in the right amounts, at the right time, so each plant gets exactly what it needs, when it needs it, to grow optimally.
