In $1945$ , the British government opened a proposal for Congress and the League for the Independence of India. The league failed in its motive. Elections to provinces were held again, it increased the gap between Hindus and Muslims. The league persisted for the demand of a separate state.

In March $1946$ , the British cabinet sent a three-member mission to Delhi to examine the best-suited political framework for a free India. It was suggested that India should remain united with some autonomy for Muslim-majority areas. The Congress and the Muslim League were unable to come to a common agreement, and it made the partition unavoidable.

The failure of the Cabinet Mission further sparked the anger of Muslims, and they decided on mass protest to fulfil their demand. Riots broke out in Calcutta and spread to the entire nation.
