Matter exists in three states. They are solid, liquid and gas. It can exist in any of these states at room temperature.

Solid: In solids, the molecules are very tightly packed and held together by a strong force of attraction. They do not have space to move around. Hence, solids are hard, have a fixed shape and a definite volume.

Liquid: In liquids, the molecules are loosely packed and the force of attraction is not as strong as in solids. There are empty spaces between them, due to which the molecules can move around. Liquids have no fixed shape but have a definite volume. They take the shape of their containers.

Gas: In gases, the molecules are very loosely packed and move around freely. The force of attraction between the molecules is almost negligible. Thus, they can flow easily and fill up all space they get. Gases have no fixed shape or volume.
