Important Points to Remember in Chapter -1 - Division from Asit Das Gupta Junior Maths 3 Solutions

1. Definition of Division:

Making equal lots of objects from a collection of objects is called division.

2. Division as Equal Sharing:

(i) Division can be done by distributing the number equally.

(ii) To find the value of 8÷2, we equally distribute 2 items in groups till all the 8 items are distributed.

3. Division as Repeated Subtraction:

To find the value of 6÷2, we repeatedly subtract the number 2 from 6 till we get the result as zero. The repeated subtraction is shown below.

6-241-222-203

So, the result of 6÷2 is 3.

4. Terms in Division:

(i) In 15÷3=5,15 is the dividend, 3 is divisor and 5 is quotient.

(ii) Remainder is the left over number after division.

(iii) Remainder in a division is always less than the divisor.

(iv) Dividend = Divisor + Quotient × Remainder

5. Division Facts:

We can write the division facts for a given multiplication statement. Example: For 2×3=6, the division facts are 6÷2=3 and 6÷3=2.
