Double fertilization is a common feature found in angiosperm plants. In this, two male gametes produced by each pollen grains, enter into the embryo sac and one of the male gametes fuses with the egg to form a diploid zygote. The second male gamete fuses with two polar nuclei to form a triploid primary endosperm nucleus (PEN). It is known as triple fusion.

The post-fertilization event in angiosperm includes endosperm and embryo development, maturation of ovules into seeds, and ovary into a fruit. The primary endosperm cell divides mitotically and forms triploid endosperm tissue. The endosperm is the food-laden tissue which is meant for nourishing the embryo in seed-bearing plants. During the development of seeds, the endosperm may either be fully consumed by the growing embryo (non-albuminous seed or non-endospermic seed) as in the case of groundnut or be retained in the mature seed as in the case of castor and be used later in seed germination (albuminous seed or endospermic seed).
