Cough and cold are the disease or disorder that lasts a short time, so they are examples of acute diseases. 3-(viii) The disease that persists for a long time is known as a chronic disease with mild symptoms are called chronic diseases. Tuberculosis is caused by a bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis is a chronic disease. 4-(i) AIDS (Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) is a sexually transmitted disease, which weakens the immune system of the organisms and therefore indirectly affect the health of a person. It is caused by the virus called HIV (Human immunodeficiency syndrome). 5-(ii) Malaria is an infectious disease which is caused by a protozoan and is carried from one person to another person through female Anopheles . The protozoan which causes malaria is named Plasmodium vivax . 6-(iii) A chronic and potentially fatal parasitic disease of the viscera caused by the parasite Leishmania . The disease is named Kala azar. 7-(v) Ascariasis is a water-borne disease and is caused by the organism, parasitic roundworm named Ascaris lumbricoides which belongs to phylum Nematoda . 8-(xiii) The antibiotics are the substances that destroys or inhibits the growth of microorganisms and is therefore used to treat some infections. The antibiotic penicillin was discovered by the scientist Alexander Fleming and is obtained from Penicillium notatum. 9-(vii) Vaccines are the biological preparation which are prepared from the weak pathogens to stimulate the production of antibodies against specific diseases. Immunisation refers to the process of getting immune to the disease with the help of vaccines for specific diseases. 10-(iv) Trypanosomiasis, also known as sleeping sickness, is a vector-borne parasitic disease and caused by infection with protozoan parasites belonging to the genus Trypanosoma .
