Waste water treatment plant is a place where sewage from houses and other buildings is brought for processing.

Basically, $3$ processes are involved in treating wastewater: primary, secondary, tertiary.
Primary Process: Mechanical process which involves screening and settling of large particles.
$\Rightarrow$ Sewage is passed through screens of vertical bars to remove non-biodegradable types of impurities.
$\Rightarrow$ After screening, wastewater is passed through a grit chamber to remove grit and sand.
$\Rightarrow$ Wastewater is transferred to water clarifier. Sludge is removed with scrapers. Oil and grease are removed with a skimmer.

$\Rightarrow$ Then digestion process is done in which sludge is transferred to a separate tank where anaerobic bacteria act on it and convert it into methane, ${CO}_{2}$ and humus like material.
$\Rightarrow$ Then clarified water is passed through the aeration tank. Water is removed from the top by sand drying beds.
$\Rightarrow$ The last step is disinfection which is to make water clean and kill the bacteria using chlorine and ozone.

Biogas is produced in the process which is used as a fuel or to produce electricity.
