To help us breathe and exchange gases, the human respiratory system is made up of several interconnected organs. A description of the respiratory system is provided below:

Nasal Cavity: The nasal cavity is where the respiratory system starts. It is our nose's inside space. Air enters the nasal cavity through the nostrils when we breathe in. Mucus and small hairs known as cilia line the nasal cavity, helping to filter out dust and other airborne contaminants.

Oral Cavity: The area within our mouth is referred to as the oral cavity. It helps with breathing as well. The oral cavity serves as the first stop for air entering the pharynx when we breathe through our mouths.

Pharynx: The air then passes via the pharynx, a tube-shaped organ at the back of our throats, from the nasal cavity. Both food and air move through the pharynx regularly. It joins the larynx to the nasal cavity and oral cavity.

Larynx: Air enters the larynx, commonly referred to as the voice box, from the pharynx. In the front of our neck is where the larynx is located. When we talk, our vocal cords vibrate and create sound. When swallowing, the larynx helps control airflow and keeps food from getting into the airway.

Trachea: The air then passes through the trachea, sometimes referred to as the windpipe, a lengthy tube. In the front of our neck, the trachea is protected by cartilage rings that keep it open.

Lungs: The trachea divides into two bronchi, one of which leads to each lung. Large, spongy organs called the lungs are found in the chest cavity. The ribcage safeguards them. The left lung has two lobes, whereas the right lung has three lobes.

Bronchioles: The bronchi further split into even smaller tubes known as bronchioles. The tiny air sacs known as alveoli are reached by these bronchioles.

Alveoli: The alveoli are where gas exchange takes place. They have extremely thin walls and resemble tiny air-filled balloons. While carbon dioxide, a waste product, travels from the bloodstream into the alveoli to be removed, oxygen from the inhaled air flows through the walls of the alveoli into the bloodstream.

Diaphragm: A dome-shaped muscle at the base of the chest cavity is known as the diaphragm. It is essential to the process of breathing. The diaphragm contracts and slides downward during inhalation, increasing the amount of space in the chest cavity and enabling the lungs to open up and fill with air. The diaphragm relaxes and rises as we exhale, forcing air out of the lungs.
