A velocity-time graph displays the direction and speed of an object's motion over a certain amount of time. Speed-time graphs are another name for velocity-time graphs. The object's velocity is plotted along the vertical axis of a velocity-time graph. The slope of a velocity graph represents the acceleration of the object. When an object is thrown upwards the gravitational force of the earth acts against the velocity of the object and pulls the object downwards, i.e, towards itself. Thus, the object returns towards the earth.

Velocity will first decrease according to the equation v=u−gt where u is initial velocity(at t=0 ) so the graph can't start from origin because u is not zero as thrown with some velocity and v is final velocity. then t=u/g the v will become zero then it will start increasing in opposite direction , if the upward direction is taken as positive then the downward velocity will be negative.
