The above figure shows the layers of soil. The layers of the soil are topsoil, subsoil and bedrock.

1. Horizon A (Topsoil):

Topsoil is the darkest in colour as it is rich in humus and minerals.

The humus in the topsoil makes the soil fertile. Plants get the essential nutrients from this layer.

Topsoil is generally soft, porous and can retain more water.

Topsoil provides shelter for many living organisms such as worms, rodents, moles and beetles.

2. Horizon B (Subsoil):

The layer of the subsoil is lighter in colour than the topsoil as it has a very little humus or organic matter.

The subsoil is harder and more compact than the topsoil.

Roots of trees generally reach up to the level of subsoil.

The layer of the subsoil is rich in soluble minerals and iron oxides.

3. Horizon C :

Horizon C contains small weathered rock. Cracks and cervices characterise it. It is difficult to dig beyond this layer. The rainwater gets collected in this layer in the form of groundwater.
