The brain is composed of three main parts: the forebrain, midbrain and hindbrain.

The forebrain is also called the cerebrum. It is the largest part of the human brain, and it is associated with the higher brain function such as thought and action.

The midbrain is also called mesencephalon. It is located below the cerebral cortex and above the hindbrain. There are three main parts of the midbrain - the colliculi, the tegmentum, and the cerebral peduncles. It serves important functions in motor movement, particularly movements of the eye, and in auditory and visual processing.

The hindbrain also called rhombencephalon is located at the lower back part of the brain. It coordinates functions that are fundamental to survival, including respiratory rhythm, motor activity, sleep, and wakefulness.
