Mitosis is a process which occurs mainly in somatic cells of plants and animals. It is a type of cell division in which single haploid cell (n) or diploid cell (2n) divides into two haploid or diploid daughter cells that are same as the parent. It consists of karyokinesis and cytokinesis. Karyokinesis has four stages:

Prophase: It is the first visible stage in karyokinesis. The chromosomes appear as long coiled threads called chromatin fibres. The chromatin fibres become shorter, thicker and visible due to the condensation. The chromatin fibres after condensation are now visible as compact structures called chromosomes. Nuclear membrane, nucleolus, endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi bodies begins to disappear and simultaneously, spindle fibres appear. These fibres originate from centrioles in animal cells.

Metaphase: Spindle fibres are attached to the kinetochore of the centromere of a chromosome. This leads to pulling of the chromosomes by the action of spindle fibres, as a result, chromosomes get aligned at the metaphasic plate.

Anaphase: The centromere of each chromosome splits into two sister chromatids and forms two daughter chromosomes. The daughter chromosomes are pulled towards the opposite poles due to the contraction of spindle fibres.

Telophase: The daughter chromosomes reach their respective poles, uncoil and become thin, long and visible. The spindle fibres start disappearing and finally disappear. The nuclear membrane and the nucleolus, endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi bodies reappear.

As the cytoplasm divides further, it forms a plasma membrane and cell wall in the middle of the cell. Small vesicles containing the material for the cell wall ultimately fuse together to form a cell plate.
